Activities in the Inner Banks

The wonderful attractions available in the Inner Banks are endless.  Here is just a sampling of places to see and visit.

  1. Intracoastal Waterway (ICW)

  2. Also known as the ICW, recreational boaters and barges alike cruise this impressive body of water.  The ICW itself can be divided into two sections;  the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, which runs from Texas to Florida, and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, which runs from Key West to Virginia.  The entire waterway is 3000 miles in length and comprises a large portion of the Great Loop (a circumnavigation route encircling the Eastern half of the North American continent).

  3. Pamlico River

  4. Located in the city of Washington, this tidal river is one of the major recreational rivers of the Inner Banks.  On a summer day you can see water skiers, sailboats, motorboats, jet skies and every other type of water sport taking place.  If you love fishing, this river (considered brackish) offers a mixture of salt and fresh water fish.

  5. Pamlico Sound

  6. This lagoon, the largest in the east coast, is what separates the Inner Banks from the Outer Banks.  A natural paradise, waterfowl make their homes along the Pamlico shores while scores of fish swim in its deep water (up to 26 feet).  Fisherman head to the sound for a vast choice of catch, including speckled trout, bass, striper, croakers and flounder.

  7. Pungo River

  8. A tributary of the Pamlico Sound, the Pungo River flows southeast and acts as part of a boundary between Hyde and Beaufort County.  Homes and docks dot the shoreline where one can see crab pots set for blue crabs.  Smaller than the Pamlico River, the Pungo is still a recreational river where all kinds of watercraft can enjoy a day out on the water.

  9. Broad Creek

  10. This deep water creek is perfect for sailboats and leads straight to the Neuse River and Pamlico Sound.  A quiet and secluded creek, this is a beautiful spot for fishing and recreational activities.
